About project

The project focuses on explaining the rise of popular culture in the Czech lands and its significance for revealing fundamental social and political changes. Towards the end of the 19th century, the lower social strata broadened their economic and cultural potency and thus they became a target audience for implementing new social and political concepts. The project deals with crucial elements of popular culture at that time - their research will reveal the significance of the popular culture in view of explaining underlying social changes. The theoretical framework is based on Cultural studies and the aim is to explore the manifestations of popular culture and to examine its audience, i.e. to uncover beliefs, values and desires of “ordinary people”.

The project is supported by Czech Science Foundation (grant no. 13-39799P).
